Tucker Nichols Opening, the details.

May 4th, 2011

May 13 – April 30, 2011

Opening Reception for the Artist, Friday May 13, 6-9pm

Gallery 16 is pleased to present an ambitious new exhibition by TUCKER NICHOLS. For this, his third solo exhibition at Gallery 16, Nichols will fill the entire gallery with his characteristic mix of objects, drawings, paintings and signs. He remains focused on the futility of the systems we devise to navigate the world, its overabundance of neglected things, and the messages we make to advertise nearly everything and seemingly nothing at the same time. This will be the first exhibition on the west coast to feature the full range of his work—in size, media, subject and approach—and a comprehensive look at his distinctive worldview.

Among the new work is an evolving series of loose stripe paintings somewhere between vibrant sunsets and technicolor curtains. His new paintings and drawings mark a recent interest in near-abstraction as a method for exploring things we cannot easily describe—like the physical experience of sublime light—on their own nonobjective terms.

A mural sized wallpaper edition based on these stripe images will be produced in collaboration with Gallery 16. In addition, a documentary video by artist Jonn Herschend on the making of the wall mural will be on view.
