We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Steven Leiber. A long-time institution in the Bay Area arts community, an expert in the field of contemporary artists books and publications, and the uncharted field of artists’ ephemera, Steven had a knowledge and enthusiasm for this too often marginalized material that was unmatched. His integrity and generosity will be greatly missed in our community and beyond. Our condolences to Steven’s family.

In connection with Tauba Auerbach’s exhibition “Tetrachromat” at Bergen Kunsthall, Folds presents Auerbach’s eponymous painting series for the first time in book form. In these paintings Auerbach twists and folds the canvas before applying the paint. In its stretched form the flat canvas conjures a trompe l’oeil rendering of its previous three-dimensional state. Transferred to the medium of the book, the paintings are presented here in a new and unexpected way alongside mathematical diagrams and three texts.

Auerbach works with a number of printed media, and the book enjoys a quite central position in her oeuvre: from highly sophisticated book sculptures that are somewhere between physical objects and non-narrative books, to a series of individually made artist books—most recently [2,3] (2011), a pop-up book where six detailed paper sculptures emerge from the book’s pages.

Park Life is proud to present Remainders, an exhibition of new paintings by Sonya Derman.

Sonya’s recent work is an evolving combination of paintings and texts exploring residual images that accumulate from everyday life. Using left-over, faded associations from daily life, fragmented memories from different places, and imagined narratives, the work shifts between the clear and unreadable; the real and the constructed; the concrete and the abstract. Her paintings can be read as fragments, entered into from various points; non-linear elements of an elusive and on-going narrative. The works allude to a temporary nature of interpersonal communications, forming, breaking apart while exploring the fragile constructions of meaning through images and words.

For this exhibit Sonya will be presenting works of gouache and acrylic on paper as well as an installation of found materials.

Sonya Derman currently lives in London, where she is pursuing an MA at the Royal College of Art. She was recently awarded the Julian Trevelyan Residency, which will culminate in an exhibition and publication of writings and artworks produced with an art group at Southwark Pensioners Centre in London.

Alongside painting and drawing, she is also interested in collaborative projects, writing, and artist books. By combining these modes of production, she explores the relationship between making, viewing, and the creative act of interpretation; the ways that art practices can move both within and beyond the gallery.

January 4 – 28, 2012

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 7, 4:00 - 6:00pm

Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Clare Rojas.

In “Piecemeal”, her third exhibition at the gallery, Rojas will present a group of paintings on stretched linen. Rojas has painted precise and colorful compositions using the traditional format of a free-hanging painting. Stepping back in her perspective from the tight, detailed narrations of previous bodies of work, the artist has taken a hard-edged view of interior spaces and the abstract shapes produced by architecture and shadow.

Clare Rojas studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Chicago Art Institute before moving to the Bay Area where she lives and maintains her studio. She has exhibited internationally, including solo shows at the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, the Museo De Arte Contemporaneo de Castillo y Leon in Spain and the Museum Het Doemien in the Netherlands, She received awards from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, Artadia and the Fleishhacker Foundation’s Eureka Fellowship.. An accomplished musician and performer, she has several books and music CD’s published.
