Park Life is pleased to announce a new exhibition of paintings by Holly Williams and Justin Gabbard.

This show represents some interesting differences from our past program. Although Holly and Justin’s work are linked to past shows through the commonality of a narrative mode, their work differs in style and theme. Rather than representing ideas through well defined symbols, actions and characters, Holly and Justin use banal everyday images to convey their ideas.
Holly Williams paints scenes she has gathered from photos, home movies, television and movie stills. Using a painterly layering process, she mimics photography but adds effects such as blurring, out of focus, and over exposure. This process is further heightened by her control of light, shadow and color saturation. The overall effect is evocative and dramatic, adding a cinematic feel to her common subject matter. This now slowed down diffused image readily allows viewers to explore their own attachments to the image.

Justin Gabbard’s paintings and drawings use people and objects as projections of his thoughts. Colors are repeated as words or are sometimes used to add rhythms to the work. Whether the narrative is based on an observation or a construction, his playful use of line and color lifts his images to take on an archetypical air.

Holly Williams is currently enrolled in the MFA program at SF State University. She has shown extensively in Southern California. This show marks her first exhibition in San Francisco.

Justin Gabbard graduated from the School of Visual Arts in NY with a degree in illustration. His work has appeared in the New Yorker, Good Magazine and American Illustration.

Both artists will be in attendance.
